BMW đã quyết định thay thế 3-Series Coupe bằng cái tên mới 4-Series Coupe, không chỉ đơn thuần là việc đổi tên, BMW còn hướng tới việc xây dựng mẫu xe 4-Series Gran Coupe trong tương lai. Ngoài ra, việc đổi tên thành 4-Series Coupe, BMW cũng muốn nhấn mạnh “đẳng cấp” mới của dòng xe này. Dù BMW chưa công bố các phiên bản 4-Series Coupe, nhưng có thông tin cho rằng mức giá của chiếc xe này sẽ cao hơn ít nhất 5.000 USD so với bản sedan tương ứng.

BMW 4-Series Coupe mới dài hơn, rộng hơn và thấp hơn người tiền nhiệm BMW 3-Series Coupe. Chiếc xe mang kiểu dáng và phong cách thiết kế hiện đại hơn, thanh thoát và thể thao hơn so với 3-Series Coupe. Chiếc xe có nhiều điểm tương đồng với 3-Series Sedan thế hệ mới.

BMW có thể chính thức ra mắt 4-Series Coupe tại Detroit Auto Show 2013, diễn ra vào tháng 1 năm sau. Chiếc xe có thể được bán ra vào mùa hè năm 2013.
